Are you interested in academic rather than physical competition? Does your family play Trivial Pursuit? Are you fascinated by facts? Are you capable of thinking quickly in pressure situations? Then Scholastic Bowl competition is for you!
Scholastic Bowl is a team contest between various area schools. Each team uses five players at a time with substitutions allowed during the contest.
A typical question consists of thirty toss-ups (questions that either side may answer using a buzzer system) and 15 bonus selections (the team that correctly answers the toss-up is allowed the first opportunity to answer a bonus selection consisting of 3-5 questions). A toss-up is worth 10 points and in the bonus situation you can score up to 20 points on topics such as social studies, literature, math, science, music, art, sports, current events, television, consumer, economics, and English.
Concordia has a 5-6th grade team and a 7-8th grade team. The 7-8th grade team plays about fifteen matches and the 5-6th grade team participates in six or seven. The 7-8th grade team also participates in a County Tournament in late march and the Concordia Invitational Tournament in mid-April. Practices are typically two days per week with one-two matches per week. Practices begin in early January and the season is concluded in mid-April. It is possible for boys and girls to also participate in other school activities and still attend some practices and Scholastic Bowl contests. Contests and practices are held immediately after the school day.
