Beginning Band students generally start in 4th grade, but 5th graders are eligible. Students do not need to know how to play an instrument to join Beginning Band; they can try out the instruments at the beginning of the school year and start practicing with the Band Director in September.

Beginning Band practices together once a week for thirty minutes. In addition, students also have a thirty-minute lesson with other students who are learning the same instrument (i.e., all clarinet players together, all trombone players together, etc.) During the first year, Beginning Band students learn the basics about their instrument, as well as posture, breathing, sound quality, note reading and rhythms.

Beginning Band students perform two concerts during the school year — the Christmas Concert in December and the Band Awards Concert in May.
